Slavka Adžović owns 170 sheep and goats. She is the only woman in Montenegro who works as a shepherdess and the only Romani woman in the country who earns her living this way. She never learnt to read or write. Yet, through her love of animals, she still found a way to make her mark as an independent farmer. Alongside her mountain hut on the windswept plateau of Krnovo, four calves and 14 cows also graze, and she sells their milk. Slavka Adžović tells a modern shepherding story and of her self-determined life caught between tradition and progress.
