Climate change is already hitting the coffee industry. Coffee prices have reached record highs, while land suitable for coffee farming could shrink by 50% by 2050. For farmers, this means livelihoods are under threat. Most coffee farmers are independent smallholders facing climate change alone. Disease is reducing yields, while replacing coffee trees is a major risk: coffee is not a quick crop, but a 20-year investment. Farmers need proof that new solutions will work, and confidence they'll be supported long term. As a global coffee leader, NESCAFÉ was well placed to act. Through years of research, it developed resilient, non-GMO crossbred coffee plantlets tailored to local conditions. To build trust, NESCAFÉ created long-standing local programmes giving farmers tools and training in regenerative agriculture, with no obligation to sell to them. It also built farmer networks to share knowledge and future-proof farms.
